Root Growth Potential and Microsite Effects on Conifer Seedling Establishment in Northern Idaho

چکیده

Environmental conditions and seedling quality interact to produce complex patterns of survival growth. Root growth potential (RGP) is one metric that can be rapidly measured prior planting, but the correlation RGP performance not consistent across studies. Site factors including microsite objects cast shade competing vegetation also influence performance. We examined effects RGP, presence/absence a object, competition cover on three native conifers Inland Northwest, USA, over 5 years. found had no effect or western larch (Larix occidentalis), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca), grand (Abies grandis) at mesic north aspect site xeric south site. Comparatively, presence increased odds by 37% for 158% fir, while absence forb 72% 26%. was less sensitive microsites competition. The strong neighborhood around seedlings help inform silvicultural practices enhance establishment planting near shading control, these may as important fir.

Effects of microsite conditions on seedling establishment on the foreland of Coleman Glacier, Washington

Questions: How do physical microsite conditions of microsites affect germination and seedling survival in different successional stages? Do different species germinate in similar microsites in a given successional stage? Location: Coleman Glacier foreland, Mount Baker, Washington State, USA. Methods: Two methods were used to characterize safe sites. 1. Grids of 300 10 cm × 10 cm plots were loca...

Upland Log Volumes and Conifer Establishment Patterns in Two Northern Upland Old-Growth Redwood Forests, A Brief Synopsis

We characterized the volume, weight and top surface area of naturally fallen logs in an oldgrowth redwood forest, and quantified conifer recruit densities on these logs and on the surrounding forest floor. We report significantly greater conifer recruit densities on log substrates as compared to the forest floor. Log substrate availability was calculated on a per hectare basis using the line-in...

Effects of seed aging on subsequent seed reserve utilization and seedling growth in soybean

Reduced seedling growth is a consequence of seed deterioration. The heterotrophic seedling growth can be considered as the product of three components: (1) initial seed weight, (2) the fraction of seed reserves which are mobilized, and (3) the conversion efficiency of mobilized seed reserves to seedling tissues. It is not clear which of these component (s) is affected by seed deterioration. To ...
